Welcome to Ci3

The Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health (Ci3) at the University of Chicago is a faculty-led initiative to advance sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice locally, nationally, and globally. Our members bring a wide range of expertise and come from diverse disciplines. Ci3 creates an intellectual hub for a network of faculty, staff and students to work collaboratively with partners from outside of the University to address critical problems in sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice. With a particular focus on adolescents, women, and communities of color, our goal is to develop new research methodologies, evidence, intervention strategies, and novel solutions to advance human health and well-being.

Game Changer Chicago Announces "Bystander" and "Smoke Stacks"

Ci3's Game Changer Chicago Design Lab is proud to announce two work-in-progress games for youth. Bystander is an interactive, computer-based narrative that seeks to empower youth to end sexual violence. The second game, Smoke Stacks is a board game designed to educate youth on the dangers of smoking and the role of tobacco companies in promoting use and addiction.

Ci3 Intern Awarded Skadden Fellowship

Ci3 intern Kara Ingelhart, a third-year student at The University of Chicago Law School, has been awarded a Skadden Fellowship. The prestigious two-year fellowship will support Ingelhart's work with LGBTQ youth with juvenile or criminal records by addressing the many barriers they face in housing, employment and educational opportunities. The Skadden Fellowship Program was established in 1988 and has been described as a "legal Peace Corps."

Youth Ages 14-18 Needed for PAID Research Study 12/9

Ci3/Game Changer Chicago are seeking youth ages 14-18 to participate in a paid research study on Tuesday, December 9 from 5:30-7 p.m. The study will take place at Ci3 (1225 E. 60th St., on The University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park).

Participants will play the Hexacago board game with peers and complete two short surveys. Time commitment is approximately 75 minutes, and each participant will be compensated $15. Youth are welcome to bring friends.

Male and Female Actors Needed for Ci3 Project - Nov. 24 & 25

Ci3 seeks male and female actors aged 18-22 and preferably African American, for a short project. We are developing a mobile app that provides women with increased information about various contraceptive methods and STI prevention, to be used in a clinical setting. The app will feature short video testimonials, focusing on condom use.

You will need to memorize and recite a short, 1-minute script about condom use on camera. Being relatable and natural on-camera is a must: it should sound like the experiences in the script are your own.

Dr. Melissa Gilliam Co-Authors New Study on Parent-Daughter Communication

Ci3 Founder and Director Dr. Melissa Gilliam, has coauthored a new study published online ahead of print in the Journal of Adolescent Health. The research considers parent-daughter communication about abortion among nonpregnant adolescents. These conversations, the authors suggest, may decrease pregnancies and abortion and obviate the need for legislation forcing communication. Read a full summary.

Game Changer Chicago Seeks Original Art for New Game

Ci3's Game Changer Chicago Design Lab is seeking original art to be featured in its game, A Day in the Life. Currently in development, A Day in the Life is a single-player role-playing game set in the world of a high school student. The game uses interactive storytelling to work through social and emotional health issues. All ages and art forms are encouraged to apply.

Ci3 Policy Coordinator Lee Hasselbacher and Founder/Director Dr. Melissa Gilliam coauthored a study published online ahead of print in the American Journal of Public Health. The study finds that pregnant teenagers seeking abortion will turn to parents and adults in their lives and who will offer support. Family Planning Action Plan Announced at Summit Featuring Dr. Melissa Gilliam

Director Julie Hamos of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services announced the launch of the Illinois Family Planning Action Plan at yesterday's Illinois Contraceptive Equity Summit. Game Changer Chicago Receives Chicago Innovation Fund Grant

Ci3's Game Changer Chicago Design Lab has received a $50,000 grant from the Chicago Innovation Fund at The University of Chicago. 

The grant will be used for continued development, play testing, and curriculum and distribution planning. GCC is one of four recipients of the spring 2014 grant. Twice a year, the Innovation Fund invests in proof-of-concept and early business develompent work for new ventures created by University of Chicago faculty, students and staff.

Ci3 - Flight MH17

Last Thursday, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crashed in Ukraine. We have since learned that among the 298 victims were leading AIDS researcher Joep Lange, as well as World Health Organization staffers and other activists en route to the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia.

Ci3 and its partner, The University of Chicago Section of Family Planning, have launched the online guide Accessing Abortion in Illinois: A Guide for Healthcare and Social Providers. According to the website, the guide is meant to help social service and healthcare providers advise pregnant women who may be seeking abortion care in Illinois.

Ci3 Founder and Director Dr. Melissa Gilliam has co-edited (with Dr. Amy Whitaker of the University of Chicago Section of Family Planning and Contraceptive Research) the forthcoming book Contraception for Adolescents and Young Adult Women. Published by Springer, the book provides evidence-based and up-to-date information for clinicians, as well as resources to pass on to patients.
